Home for the Holidays

Now is the best time to start thinking about remodeling your home for the holidays

Growing up, I always loved the holidays. The turkey and food, decorations, time with friends and family, and gifts. More often than not, the holidays were also the most stressful time of the year for me, buying presents and running around and planning for the holidays. Although the holidays bring me lots of joy and fond memories, I’m always glad when they’re over. I always wait until the last minute to go holiday shopping and planning. Procrastination is the primary reason for the stress.
If you are planning to remodel your home for the holidays, now is the time to start planning.
Depending on how large your remodel, advanced time and preparation is the only way to make sure that everything will be completed prior to the holidays with minimal stress.

For a kitchen remodel, it may take 1-2 weeks of time for a designer to come to your house and measure the space, design a few kitchen options, not to mention the time it takes to make a decision on your dream kitchen, pick out finishes, write up a complete estimate, and write up a service agreement. After the order is placed, it may take 4-6 weeks for cabinet production and delivery and organizing the right work crews prior to starting work. Depending on the extent of your remodel, the work may take another 1-6 weeks from when the work starts until it is completed, allowing a few days to a week for hiccups that were not accounted for. This puts the total time of the remodel to 1-3+ months. Luckily, most kitchen and bath remodels may not take that long, but it’s always better to have the extra time.

If larger remodels do not fit into your timeline or budget, there are many smaller projects that can be completed within 2 weeks of making a decision to remodel. New carpet or wood flooring in the dining room or family room, and new granite countertops and tile for your kitchen floor or back-splash, should only take a week from when the order is placed to when the materials arrive with an additional 1-2 days for installation. Even sprucing up the guest or powder room with a few new fixtures, tile, and new paint can make a big difference to the appearance of your home and should only take a few weeks to complete from when you decide to remodel.

To save time and stress on your holiday remodel, go to a design center that carries most if not all of what you need to complete the project. There is nothing worse than going to a big store and feeling lost without anyone to help. Select a contractor that can organize it all and do it all. Valuable time can be wasted when you are organizing the plumber, electrician, drywall/painter, carpenter, tile installers, to come one after the other. It’s worth the extra money to save the time. When planning your remodel, make sure that your designer is also aware of your budget. Your budget will always impact the design. The more your designers knows how much you want to spend, the easier it will be for them to narrow select options to what you can afford.
